The Optometrist Becomes The Patient

As an Optometrist, who was completely reliant on glasses and contact lenses to correct considerable short-sightedness since childhood, I had often considered refractive surgery since my days as an undergraduate.

Through previous research and from first hand experience of managing patients post-operatively, I possess insightful knowledge and awareness into refractive surgery and although the thought of freedom from glasses and contact lenses was always very appealing, as a nervous patient, I quite naturally felt anxious and held some reservations about proceeding with treatment.

Two years ago, I finally made the decision to go ahead with treatment and can only describe my experience as absolutely phenomenal.

After only a couple of minutes where the surgeon performed treatment in a safe and pain free manner, I immediately started to notice an improvement in my unaided vision. On my way home from the treatment centre, for the first time ever, I was able to read car number plates at driving standards and later that evening, my vision in each eye was better than 20/20.

Today, two years on from treatment, I am appreciating an unaided level of vision which I was previously unable to achieve, even with my glasses and contact lenses. My vision is now two lines better than 20/20 in each eye and has never been so clear and comfortable. Advances in modern day medicine and technology and competent experts in this field have made what I would otherwise think unimaginable possible. I feel completely overwhelmed and absolutely delighted. To date, going ahead with refractive surgery is undoubtedly the best decision I've ever made!
